HomeLab to Enterprise: Overview of my Current Homelab

As a highly experienced IT professional, I am always looking for ways to stay current with the latest technologies and improve my skills. One way I have been able to do this is by setting up a home lab using an old enterprise HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server. With 64GB of RAM and several SAS hard drives, this server provides a powerful platform for experimentation and learning.

I installed VMware ESXi on the server, which is a type 1 hypervisor that allows me to create and manage virtual machines. I created several virtual machines, including a Windows Server, Ubuntu, and Redhat Linux. By using different operating systems and software, I have been able to gain a deep understanding of virtualization, which is an essential skill for many IT-related positions.

In addition to the virtual machines, I also set up a Synology NAS to run various home services.

These services include AD Guard, which is an ad-blocker and privacy protection software, pfSense firewall/proxy, which is an open-source firewall software that allows me to secure my network, Plex media server, which allows me to stream my media collection, Synology backup services that protect my data, and Uptime Kuma which monitors my network. This experience has given me valuable knowledge and experience in network security, data protection, and remote access.

I have also been experimenting with Docker containers and Kubernetes, which are becoming increasingly popular in enterprise environments. This has given me a strong understanding of containerization and orchestration, which are in-demand skills for many employers. Containerization allows me to package and deploy software in a portable and efficient way, while orchestration provides a powerful platform for managing containerized applications.

Furthermore, I have been experimenting with Palo Alto firewalls and Kemp load balancers to learn about network security and load balancing, which are essential for many enterprise environments. This has given me a deep understanding of how to secure networks and ensure that they are running at optimal performance.

Overall, setting up a home lab using an old enterprise HP server has allowed me to stay current with the latest technologies and improve my skills. My experience with virtualization, network security, data protection, remote access, containerization, orchestration, and load balancing makes me a valuable candidate for many IT-related positions. I am always eager to apply my skills and experience to real-world challenges and I believe that I would be a great asset to any organization. I am confident in my ability to make significant contributions to any company that I work for, and I look forward to the opportunity to do so.
